Here in Mexico, I can almost always count on Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures to pad each outing’s list by two species. Turkey Vultures have a wingspan and weight similar to that of Egyptian Vultures. a The Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture looks very similar to the Turkey Vulture , but is a bit smaller.

One of my most vivid memories of watching The Sopranos – still the best TV series ever, in my opinion – is Tony outside barbecuing, occasionally turning the different pieces of meat. Contrary to alleged preferences among humans, the golden-headed cisticola has a shorter tail during the breeding season ( source ).

The Kerkini Lake National Park is my favourite birding area in the whole of the Balkans and while I’ve been here in April and again (migration), September (migration), October (coffee break), December and January (wintering), this was my first time in the breeding season, in May. But nowadays, they, too, breed here, about 20 pairs this year.

Most likely, the seed is a of couple years old and no one else will carry it in their stores because the nut meat is not as desirable to birds (and chock full of meal moth larvae). Why is that?
