Greater flamingoes winter in large numbers Kerkini’s wintering Flamingoes probably breed in Turkey Forty years ago Flamingoes were rare visitors to Greece: several thousand now winter on Kerkini Lake Kerkini is an artificial lake, its depth varying considerably throughout the year. It was photographed on the east embankment.

During the breeding season, some Cattle Egrets look like teenage girls who have just discovered the existence of make-up, and consequently massively overdo it. While having somebody else raise your chicks like an attractive strategy to me, it is not without dangers. It is probably all downhill from here. What’s next?

Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you? Greater Flamingos are considered cooperative breeders as fledglings are raised in a creche, in which large numbers of young are watched by multiple non-breeding adult greater flamingos. Mostly just oversized grey mammals there, not too many birds.

Largely because of the same reason this past summer was a such a good year for Snowy Owls , resulting in a huge irruption of them into the south, we are seeing huge numbers of Arctic Hares this spring. And while I haven’t made it over their yet I hope to before they disperse into breeding territories.

Then rumors leaked out that at this same site the mythical Red Owl could easily be seen, Madagascar Serpent Eagle was breeding and other rare birds and lemurs abounded. I had only seen Red Owl once before in flight and here was one nonchalantly perched in a Pandanus! The mythical Red Owl on a day roost at Lake Bemanevika.

Many of you in the south are enjoying great sightings of Snowy Owls ( Bubo scandiacus ) this winter. Everywhere on Facebook I see friends and acquaintance posting photos of Snowy Owls , and or status updates on how they’ve succeeded or failed in their search for reported birds. Why is that? Did I mention they’re fast?

Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season. The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here. Another of Ghana’s forest gems, the seldom encountered Fraser’s Eagle Owl. .
