Largely because of the same reason this past summer was a such a good year for Snowy Owls , resulting in a huge irruption of them into the south, we are seeing huge numbers of Arctic Hares this spring. And while I haven’t made it over their yet I hope to before they disperse into breeding territories.

Then rumors leaked out that at this same site the mythical Red Owl could easily be seen, Madagascar Serpent Eagle was breeding and other rare birds and lemurs abounded. I had only seen Red Owl once before in flight and here was one nonchalantly perched in a Pandanus! The mythical Red Owl on a day roost at Lake Bemanevika.

Sadly, this population too went into a steep decline until only 57 animals were left in Germany in 1997, raising fears about their imminent extinction in the country. I’ve once seen Grey Partridges there, and the meadows have breeding Montague’s Harriers. Do NOT walk around the empty buildings trying to see/flush them!

Baird’s Sparrow by Seagull Steve Julie’s was not a wild bird, well, at least not one that lived outdoors: My Best Bird of the Year, and the 22 preceding, was Charlie, a Chestnut-fronted Macaw I got as a captive-raised fledgling in 1989. What’s not to like about an owl that lives underground?

I was a bit surprised to see a juvenile Grey Treepie in Shanghai – it seems too young to already be on migration, and there was an adult nearby, so most likely the species is breeding in Shanghai, along with approximately 24 million humans. Soldiers could probably learn a lot about camouflage from this species.

Snowy Owl, Long Island, NYS. This was a special Snowy Owl encounter in a year of many Snowy Owls. It was, indeed, a Snowy Owl. I drove to the other end of the lot and watched the owl fly back to its meal, smack in the middle of the empty lot. How often does one have a Snowy Owl all to one’s self?

Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season. As with Chinese male humans, having your own building is still vital to raising young. There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June. So, the birds start collecting mud and small sticks. Nest building: a good activity for a rainy day. You should try it too. Not going for the obvious either.
