When I last visited the town almost 10 years ago, it had a Wild West feel, and Wikipedia claims that it is “an important location for trade with Myanmar, in both legal and illegal goods and services” but it seemed pretty tame to me this time.

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). To Nitin, this was a recce trip for his new wildlife photography tours enterprise.

The only wildcat I found was illegally killed by hunters during closed season. These handsome finches breed in the far north of Europe and come here for the winter only. Photographed within Beljarica: five White-tailed Eagles by Snezana Panjkovic. I barely started when some sulphur (a.k.a. Easily enough, they got it here.

The Kerkini Lake National Park is my favourite birding area in the whole of the Balkans and while I’ve been here in April and again (migration), September (migration), October (coffee break), December and January (wintering), this was my first time in the breeding season, in May. But nowadays, they, too, breed here, about 20 pairs this year.

The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. Local farmers view it as a threat to domesticated wildlife.

The survival of songbirds depends in part upon eliminating illegal hunting. Fish and Wildlife Service, the American Bird Conservancy, and other groups teamed up to translocate 50 of the birds to another island, Laysan. The population of Millerbirds on Laysan has doubled , and breeding seems to be going well.

Known breeding localities are now limited to only a few of the islands in the Caribbean including the Bahamas, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Antigua/Barbuda.
