The Hidden Qualities of House Sparrows

10,000 Birds

I therefore decided to counter this month’s heinous wood-warbler attack on my retina by choosing the good old trusty House Sparrow as the topic of my May post. The last aspect is something I will elaborate on further below, but not before showing off a prime fine male House Sparrow, unethically photographed at its nest site.

First Outbreak of Usutu Virus in Germany

10,000 Birds

That is very cold for the south of Germany. This thrush is extremely common in urban and suburban Germany and one of the most conspicuous bird species here, comparable to the American Robin in North America. Species that were apparently less affected were Corvids, pigeons/doves, the Paridae, sparrows, warblers, and Black Redstarts.

Some Hokkaido Winter Passerines

10,000 Birds

Given how far Hokkaido is from Europe, it seems a bit surprising how many bird species wintering on this Japanese island have a name starting with “Eurasian” Or how many of these species I have also seen in my parents’ garden in Germany. The Rose-ringed Parakeets of Heidelberg

10,000 Birds

Here in Germany, we don’t wish we had. Yes, Germany has parrots, or parakeets to be more precise. Unlike North America, Germany has never had naturally occurring psittacines that went extinct, and the one we have is a true and complete invasive alien introduction. Because we never have had.

A Bird Presentation in Shanghai

10,000 Birds

This bird used to be quite common in Germany, but now it is rare. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is another bird that is very common in our compound. The Olive-backed Pipit is a small songbird that in Shanghai can only be seen in winter – in summer, it breeds further north. Hopefully, this will not change in the future.

St. Michael’s summer birding along the Danube in Serbia

10,000 Birds

It is the largest woodpecker in Europe (to describe its size, I’ll tell you that Goldeneyes breed in the holes this pecker makes). Yet, this is also a part of the international cycling route from Germany to the Black Sea. A sudden flight of a forest ghost, the Black Woodpecker goes from one side of the gully to another.
