Snowy Owl irruptions are relatively predictable and often huge, with birds arriving as far south of their normal breeding range as Florida and the Bahamas. The white feathers of Snowy Owls allow you to see the blood from their most recent kills still staining their plumage, which is about as metal as any wild animal is likely to get.

Other areas of New York City where the parakeets were seen in 1970 included the upper East side of Manhattan, Great Kills, Staten Island, Ellis Island and the area around the Statue of Liberty. Florida’s Introduced Birds: Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus). Monk Parakeet is the only parrot species that builds its own nest.

There were birders from a wide cross-section of the United States: Colorado, Ohio, Idaho, Iowa, Wyoming, Washington State, Pennsylvania, New York State, New Jersey, California, Texas, Florida. I’ve been fascinated by flamingos since seeing them in the infield at Hialeah Park Race Track when I was a kid visiting Florida.
