We also try to re-nest uninjured baby birds so we don’t interfere with a bird’s breeding cycle. Experience shows that bird parents do feed babies in makeshift nests reattached to tree branches, bushes, gutters, and even tree cavity sections duct taped to another tree. Ok, so you’ve rescued a bird. Find a box.

Such meditative birding is, for me, the heart of the experience. There was plenty of time to try to convince the dogs that the people in the canoe were not in imminent danger and did not need to be rescued. Eventually the dogs jumped in to rescue the canoers, only to make for shore. What could be better?

Scientists were largely limited to studies birds in breeding colonies, at least those we knew about and that were accessible (and, if you think that’s a complete list, you haven’t read the news that came out this week about a new colony of Adélie penguins found in the Danger Islands, Antarctica).
