But at times, in the breeding season especially, the same birds would belt some of the most complex and absolutely juicy notes that made me reconsider my feelings toward them. They seem to be a bit angry for the most part. Clearly a maddening situation for any right-thinking thrush. I’ve grown to enjoy them over the years, however.

Many factors need to be considered including breed, size and energy level. Rarely do shelters know anything about the dog’s history when they first come in and the longer a dog lives at the shelter the more impact it will have on their emotional well-being. Second, reading about birds courting and parenting brings out the tendency to identify, which leads directly to anthropomorphism, the tendency to assign birds human emotions and thoughts. Some people love books like that. Think of birds too much as humans and you lose the specialness that makes them birds. Yellow Warbler fledgling.

Field guides listed two subspecies – delicata (which would eventually become the highly migratory Wilson’s Snipe ) and paraguaiae (breeding resident South American Snipe ) – which were extremely difficult to discern from one another in the field. It toyed with my emotions for many minutes before it eventually flew off.

On our first morning after breakfast, my group and the teens piled onto a boat and headed out to Eastern Egg Rock, once again the breeding ground for Atlantic Puffins (as well as a host of other seabirds) thanks to biologist Dr. Stephen Kress. A Magnificent Frigatebird’s feathers weigh more than its skeleton.

Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season. However they will not and cannot breed, and once these individual’s natural lifespans are over, these bird populations will be lost forever.
