The other day I was exploring a new area for the first time, birding the national park that I’ve watched only in BBC documentaries, the place famous for the largest Dalmatian Pelican colony in the world – more than 1300 pairs! Dalmatian and White Pelicans (White = the black ones). Have you heard of it? Can you pinpoint it on a map?

From that year onward my work became dedicated to the protection of the area, as well as promotion of local ecotourism possibilities. Other important breeding species include Black and White Stork , Lesser Spotted , White-tailed , and Booted Eagle. Overwintering raptors include Greater Spotted , Golden , and Imperial Eagles.

Fortunately, as I found out over the next four days, High Island, the Bolivar Peninsula, the whole east Texan Gulf coast area is a place of diverse habitats, some protected, some accidental, all offering fantastic avian opportunities. Sometimes they have to protect their catches from piratic African Fish Eagles who swoop down as soon as they that see a Saddle-bill has successfully caught a fish. During breeding season, their white plumage turns a delicate pink color, a lovely sight indeed. They also prey on frogs and crabs.

The decrease in numbers has been accompanied by fragmentation of the breeding range and is continuing to affect all populations. Disturbance on breeding grounds (e.g. Illegal spring hunting and round-ups of moulting birds are taking place on the Russian breeding grounds and illegal shooting continues in Norway.

Black Stork and three pairs of White-tailed Eagles breed here. Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. I heard some sounds coming from a mangrove bush and we discovered a Horsfield’s Bronze-Cuckoo that appeared to have been raised by a protective Dusky Gerygone. Striated Heron. Sharp-tailed Sandpiper.
