Birding the Kruger Park (2): Bateleur area

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Thanks to their friendly and calm personality, they don’t have a need to express themselves vocally like some other parrot species.

The Magpie Geese have been known to breed in the area and sometimes you will observe them amongst the lilies, but sometimes they are perched in the trees at the end of the wetland. Although we have never observed Painted Snipe at this location, they were recorded breeding here in 1960 and 1961. Purple Swamphens. Black-necked Stork.

At 3-4 inches long , they rival those of the great Grizzly Bear, and allow the Harpy Eagles to go after prey unavailable to many other birds. Like Woods, I can’t get over their talons.
