A large bird of prey flying across a hill turned out to be the rare Mountain Serpent Eagle (an endemic relative of the Crested Serpent Eagle ), which flew into a tree. When we trained the scope on that tree, we found a Blythe’s Hawk-eagle perched instead! Mountain Serpent-eagle taken later in trip.

Golden-capped Parakeets, adorned with blazing orange crowns, were common all along this stretch while a Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle nest was visible once we got to the top. It was a poignant and ironic sight to see them in the process of breeding right next to that barn at the edge of the park.

The adult Pied Oystercatchers were still at their non-breeding site at Gantheaume Point and will no doubt lay their first eggs for 2015 in the first week of July. We had thought we had completed our year list for 2014, until we had a surprise encounter with a Little Eagle on 28th December.

On a quick browse, here are some facts I learned: Melanin helps to resist bacteria that attack feathers; most parrots are left-footed and this is associated with problem-solving; some birds nest in two different places in the same year. qn Archaeopteryx-like theropod from China Runner-up: The Bald Eagle that swooped around over the Big Gay Race in Minneapolis in October, which I didn’t get a picture of.
