On BirdTrack, the British equivalent of e-Bird, the list of birds provided does allow for Tufted Duck x Ferruginous Duck to be recorded, but not Tufted Duck x Pochard. However, that’s exactly what I guessed the duck swimming in front of me had to be. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard. Was it the same individual?

One of the sweetest subsections of the duck family has to be the sawbills, formally known as mergansers. The Chinese Merganser ( Mergus squamatus ) is also known as the Scaly-sided Merganser , with good reason; this dashing duck resembles a goosander with a wispy topknot and fish scales along its flanks.

Though these plovers are common on the North Norfolk coast, their nearest breeding grounds are far to the north. A few do breed in Europe, on the extreme north-east of European Russia. These were dark-bellied birds from Russia. There were several Wigeon to be seen, too, but all were snoozing with heads under wings.

Next came a stop in Russia. You can take in views of waterfowl including Eurasian Wigeon , Barnacle Geese , Trumpeter Swan , and a plethora of ducks and gulls. Finland is a great place to see a variety of different species, many of which flock to the north to take advantage of the extended daylight during the breeding season.

The decrease in numbers has been accompanied by fragmentation of the breeding range and is continuing to affect all populations. Disturbance on breeding grounds (e.g. Illegal spring hunting and round-ups of moulting birds are taking place on the Russian breeding grounds and illegal shooting continues in Norway.

The Grey-headed Lapwing- Vanellus cinereus breeds in north-east China and Japan between April and June and then migrate to spend the winter in northern Southeast Asia from northeastern India to Cambodia and southern Japan.
