As far as I know, White-rumped Snowfinches are not among the main prey of the Saker Falcon – but they associate with colonies of pika, using burrows for both roosting and breeding (HBW), so it makes sense to mention them here (plus I forgot to cover them in my earlier post on Ruoergai birds). Black Drongos must be breeding here – this juvenile was terrorizing his parents with constant calls for food. As a consequence of frequently walking around in Shanghai, I have a fairly large number of cats in my home – picked up as kittens left on their own on the rather uninviting streets of the city.

Tragically, I never saw any birds near the nest later on – I guess they abandoned it, decided to quit procreating, or just got eaten by some other bird or cat. But the stars of the month were some breeding Eurasian Tree Sparrows. The male at work. The juvenile Chinese Blackbirds get older but still look kind of stupid.

As all my cats are indoor animals, I do not feel particularly responsible or guilty for this. On the other hand, in April, some other species start breeding here in Shanghai. Nearby, two Grey-headed Lapwings have apparently decided to stay in Shanghai and start preparations for breeding. Maybe the birds know something.

I once had a cat who loved to lick plastic bags, and while I find the pleasure in this hard to comprehend, it still seems more understandable to me than the joy (?) According to the HBW, when breeding, male birds do most of the incubation and parenting while females often leave the nest up to one week before the eggs hatch.
