To be fair, Howell has also written about hummingbirds and finding birds in Mexico, which to my mind are a little easier to comprehend. But the best place to observe them is from a boat or, if you are lucky, on their breeding grounds, which tend to be isolated islands.

We spent almost 4 months crossing the USA and had an amazing time, although it was not the right time of year for Wood-Warblers. We did however see a Yellow-rumped Warbler at Elephant Butte Lake, New Mexico on 16th November 1989 and a Townsend’s Warbler at Big Sur, California on 3rd December 1989.

This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month. Secretive, silent and undetectable outside of its breeding season, found only in the U.S. My own Best Bird of the Year is easy.
