Greater Flamingos are considered cooperative breeders as fledglings are raised in a creche, in which large numbers of young are watched by multiple non-breeding adult greater flamingos. On the other hand, their preferred food is blood, and they also feed on it directly, pecking at a mammal’s wounds to keep them open ( source ).

It was thought that later nests with smaller clutches were either replacement clutches from a failed nest or from low-quality breeders. There are mammals, with Nilgai antelope being the most obvious. The study also noted a correlation between the monsoon water levels and the number of nests.

Westland Petrels are endemic breeders to New Zealand, and an attractive large black seabird. That said, I’ve not managed to get there in a long time, because you need to actually make an effort to get there, and as we’ve established before I’m not much of one for making any kind of effort.

The island was mostly forested through its history and never had introduced browsing mammals, meaning it had an intact flora. Cook’s Petrel ( Pterodroma cookii ) is another range-restricted breeder that nests on Little Barrier Island. The species was lost for over a hundred years before being rediscovered in 2003.

These two islands are about halfway between the tip of South Africa and Antarctica in the Subantarctic Indian Ocean, have had relatively few human visitors, and are primarily inhabited with some of the rarest seabirds in the world and a smaller number of mammals.

The forest grows on the new lakeshore and it, too, is a mere 15 years old, but already provides an important corridor for large mammals such as Roe Deer and even Brown Bears , which sometimes come down to feed on beans. For longest lists, go there in May when migrants are still passing while the local breeders are active and visible.

First, he was mostly focused on the mammals. He did know all the little roads in the area and as he wasn’t a trapper but a breeder we asked him to show us the way.
