It was dark when we reached our accommodation in the hillside village of Pachna, where we were greeted by a duet of Scops Owls. According to the taxonomists, these weren’t regular Scops Owls ( Otus scops ) but the endemic Cyprus Scops Owl ( Otus cyprius ). It was strange to hear it here in Cyprus.

Yellow-headed Blackbirds: Conspicuous Wetland Breeders

I found this cluster of Yellow-headed Blackbirds in Sierra Valley, California, on a bird outing with the local Audubon Society after installing some artificial Burrowing Owl habitat earlier that day. His rivals where on the other side of the bridge, foraging on the lily pads for aquatic insects. Yea, I’m bad!

There are 240+ breeding birds in Serbia, but the colonial breeders and raptors were treated separately, and for a few dozen uncommon species there wasn’t enough data for computer modeling software. Once in the forest, attention should be diverted to the White-backed Woodpecker , also Eurasian Woodcock , Stock Dove and Ural Owl.
