An Insect Hatch at Kissena Corridor Park

One of my favorite birding spots is Kissena Corridor Park in Queens, New York. Not only that, but shortly after I moved to New York City in 2008 the Parks Department ripped out a whole bunch of invasive species, worked hard to prevent them from coming back, and planted a bunch of native species.

Where Are You Birding This Final Weekend of January 2012?

What else is nice is the prospect of seeing brand new birds in beautiful habitat. I, on the other hand, will be lollygagging with the usual Western New York winter species. Corey will be experiencing birding bliss all weekend long at the mighty, mighty Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival.

Big Year Birding Update

Josh Vandermeulen is sitting pretty at 317 species for the year in Ontario, only 21 off the province’s record of 338, set by Glen Coady in 1996. Anthony also has a brand new blog ! Blake and Holly Wright are hoping to photograph 400 species in the lower 48 this year and have managed to make it to 351 thus far.

Old Crow Distillery Company: Old Crow

This year it was an American Crow ( Corvus brachyrhyncus ), though at home in Albany, New York, it’s just as likely to be – and has been in the past – a Fish Crow ( Corvus ossifragus ). I generally wait until I have at least a dozen species on my year list before having my first drink of the year.

National Audubon Society Birds of North America: A Guide Review

Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. The new series was masterminded by Chanticleer founder Paul Steiner, who was lauded on his death 19 years later for his “brilliant idea of creating bird guides with photographs” and organizing them visually.

I had heard of Roger Tory Peterson, but I didn’t know that he was a New York birder, born in upstate Jamestown in 1908, nor that he had birded the Bronx when he was a young man, a member of NYC Linnaean Society and the fabled Bronx Bird Club. I was what could be called a ‘field guide virgin’ at the time.)
