I don't personally know anyone who read a book or a pamphlet one day, became a vegan the next, and is still a vegan. I do know people who became vegan (also after watching " Earthlings ") who are now vegetarians, pescetarians and run-of-the-mill omnivores. Not one book, that's for sure (he reads about golf, history or the economy).

I haven't read the books and frankly I didn't know much about the film. Here were some odd points to ponder: I think Bella, the main character, is a vegetarian. The main good vampire says that the good vampires are like vegetarians because they restrict their eating and then says Imagine if you had to eat only tofu all day.

I've also found that there are all kinds of activists and videos and concerts and demonstrations and books that I've never even heard of, that cause omnivores and vegetarians to go vegan. What I have discovered is that people like my husband, who went vegan overnight from omnivore, aren't exactly common, but they're also not that rare.

Much of the book deals with topics vegans have likely pondered, likely frequently. And this is partly what’s so disappointing about the message of this book: Herzog amasses the research, and sees and does things that involve tremendous suffering and injustice. He watched cockfighting and killed and skinned animals, but won’t eat veal.

If I told you what I spent last year doing work-wise, you probably wouldn't believe me and you'd definitely suggest I write a book about it. From the feral cats of Project Treadstone to Charles' back surgery to problems with Violet's Vetsulin (insulin for dogs), we had more than our share of issues. What a relief!

There's no remotely vegan or even vegetarian (though I'm not even sure what the latter would look like) message. .: One message is that there's nothing wrong with eating animals, and in fact it's fantastic and thrilling and a win-win-win (people-planet-profits) when you eat animals that were "produced" by Polyface Farms.

In the name of moral consistency I became a vegetarian four years ago. Mr. Foer's book "Eating Animals" is definitely worth the reading for any individual who has the guts to face the facts of a meat-based diet and the damage it is doing to man and animal alike.

The good news is that if you know someone who needs to be schooled on all of the sordid details of factory farming, and appreciates good writing, this is a great book. Also, if, like me, you know someone who appreciates the things we do with language to mask the reality of our behavior, this is a great book. Not great, but good.

Here are some observations: When reading a book about gorillas to/with a seven-year old, I was struck by the mixed messages the book sent. Here 's the book, and in the preview you can see that in the beginning when the gorilla being described is male he is referred to as "he." We do that with cats and dogs already, right?
