From Yellow-hooded Blackbirds to Purple and Common Gallinules , there are almost too many birds to focus on! Last visit we enjoyed superb views of a trio of Masked Cardinals , interrupted by the arrival of a Green Kingfisher that was so intent on hunting, it hardly even cast an eye in our direction.

This pervasive pandemic we’re currently experiencing has squashed everyone’s travel plans – humans that is. Last weekend I wasn’t on the hunt for any species in particular though. A Pinnated Bittern gets escorted to another hiding place by a squadron of Yellow-hooded Blackbirds.

A lot of nature photographers try to exclude human made elements but I think the porta potty kind of makes the photo. Ever present Brewer’s Blackbirds and Common Ravens interrupted her mellow park-side life by mobbing her whenever she got too close for comfort. The blackbirds had good reason to be cautious.

To be honest, both the robin and the flycatchers shown above remind me of the easter eggs I hunted for as a child – the same strong colors in front of a green background, same time of the year (feel free to insert your own Proust Madeleine reference here) … Bluethroats apparently are good at imitating other birds. .

At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Those bears live in the wild and are not used to humans. Brewer’s blackbird, Euphagus cyanocephalus. Red-winged blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus. From the behavioural point of view, what has happened? Arctic tern, Sterna paradisaea.

The Eurasian Blackbird was not found in new Zealand before man, but it is now. Secondly, New Zealand had already experienced on wave of extinction due to the introduction or rats and human hunting. To Victorian eyes the fauna and flora of New Zealand was strange, both in appearance and in its apparent paucity.

It’s very hard to organize the many ways in which human beings relate to avian beings into comprehensible text.
