After several game drives, once again we are at the front gate of the Gir National Park in the state of Gujarat. Underneath an arched branch, one familiar bird, a Common Blackbird female… but after a recent split in 2005 by Rasmussen and Anderton, it was elevated to a full species – Indian Blackbird ( Turdus simillimus ).

Great Gray Owl in Keene, New York

The Birds of March Madness

Among the “First Four” games, the LIU-Brooklyn Blackbirds faced the squad from James Madison University. At least one local European Starling decided to cheer on the Blackbirds at University of Dayton Arena in Ohio, flying around the court and even touching down on the hardwood before perching in the rafters.

There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either. The Eurasian Blackbird was not found in new Zealand before man, but it is now. But man cannot live on bread alone, and the homesick settlers wanted more than just game. Part of the world they wanted to transport was natural.

There were, in her book, three kinds: Owls, Pigeons, and Ducks. and birds that would fly over either (which included raptors, and therefore I’m going to spot him the owls.) Baby Bird Books, Little Bird Books

I was delighted by the invitation and spent hours going through my photos, printing them out, imagining fifteen 4-year olds entranced by egrets, herons, and Burrowing Owls. Jake’s favorite before-bedtime book when he was just a bit younger was Owl Babies by Martin Waddell, a picture book I had picked up at a nature center.
