Eurasian Tree Sparrows from long ago

Since it’s really hard to type in a splint, here is a blast from the past: specifically from the beginning of this long, strange trip, my cross-country journey from New York to Montana: I have to confess, I had forgotten all about the Eurasian Tree Sparrow. I wasn’t thinking about the Eurasian Tree Sparrow at all, though.

How many can YOU see in a day?

The same can be said, to a lesser extent, for the shorebirds, New World sparrows, warblers, and many other families. For example, these may all technically be Blackbirds, but there are Red-winged and Yellow-headed Blackbirds and a Brown-headed Cowbird in this one photo. Sure, the dog didn’t count for our eBird list.

New Place in Costa Rica, New Yard List

Back in the old place, there were more birds in the nearby coffee farm but it wasn’t easy to bird because I couldn’t see it from my door and there were stray dogs. In typical blackbird fashion, this common garden bird gave occasional, loud, ringing calls. These were. Great Kiskadee. Social Flycatcher.

Week 31: Visits to Hart Mountain, Malheur and the surrounding areas.

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. The first part of the week, we parked the RV at a campground right on the water, of Dog Lake, 20 miles southwest of Lakeview, Oregon.

Greater White-fronted Goose in Queens

I heard Red-winged Blackbirds conk-a-ree-ing from phragmites. It didn’t take too long for my reverie in my birding Eden to be disrupted by an unleashed dog that flushed the geese. Greater White-fronted Goose in flight after being flushed by an off-leash dog. The morning wasn’t a total loss though.

Acclimatisation Societies of New Zealand

They took dogs to Australia, chickens across the Pacific, rabbits to England, horses to the New World, and then brought potatoes back. The Eurasian Blackbird was not found in new Zealand before man, but it is now. In many ways, that is exactly what happened. There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either.

A Bird Presentation in Shanghai

The Chinese Blackbird is among the most common birds in our compound. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is another bird that is very common in our compound. It sometimes makes a rather strange croaking noise, a bit as if a dog tries to bark but does not know how to do it properly. The juveniles look spottier and are mostly brown.
