In the Flesh: Griffon Vultures

They’re not the Lammergeyer – they’re not even close, as the Lammergeyer dwells alone in the genus Gypaetus – but the Egyptian Vulture and Cinereous Vulture are worthy birds in their own right. And then there’s the Griffon Vulture. Ultimately, this was the only vulture I was to see on my Spanish adventure.

Acclimatisation Societies of New Zealand

There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either. The reasons for this perceived lack of birds are threefold. Gamebirds, such as turkeys, pheasants, partridges, quail, Mallards and the like were also brought, as were popular sport fish. The Eurasian Blackbird was not found in new Zealand before man, but it is now.

Karumba, Queensland

Our visit to Karumba earlier this year was of course to observe the local bird-life and we took some time driving from Normanton. The first place to stop on the way to Karumba from Normanton is the Mutton Hole wetlands, where among the water lilies there were good numbers of water-birds. Australian Brush Turkey.

The beats are famed for their inclusion on the nice side of the ledger and this month 9 of them shared 163 lists from 7 countries (Australia, Costa Rica, USA, UK, Serbia, China and Trinidad and Tobago) and accounted for 735 bird species. Mike doubled up with “smushed”, a new addition to the adjective list.
