Newts are salamanders, or, more precisely, newts are aquatic salamanders with a land-living juvenile phase. That is, all newts are salamanders but not all salamanders are newts. Newts can be found in Asia, Europe, and North America.

These lovely birds are actually quite common, many of which can be seen right along the water front of down town La Paz. This blueish-gray bird has a bright white belly, and white stripe that runs up the front of the neck. This one caught a nice fat salamander. The Bill will have a blue gray base during the breeding season.

From the time he can remember, every camping, hiking, or simple trip outside was focused on finding wildlife with herps, mammals, birds and native fish as his primary interests. When it comes time to for me to plan a vacation I first figure out what herps occur in the area and then what birds and mammals I can also find.

Among the things that more and more birders have mentioned to me over the years is their urge to start their own birding blog, but they just don’t know how to go about it. One of Desi’s favorite things to do when we are visiting his grandparents is wander around the yard looking for bugs, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals – basically, anything living thing. But what we found hiding amid the Black-eyed Susans on Sunday was clearly his favorite creature of the year.

We all have those days when we want to get out and go birding, but can never quite decide where we want to go. Mason Farm is one of the best places for birding in the region, and arguably in the state. The bugs and snakes and salamanders were pretty great too. But being fall, the birding has not been a complete bust.
