My dog and I were in the yard today when I heard a squeaking noise like a baby bird - I looked over and i my dog was sniffing hard at the ground, I went over and he had a baby bunny in front of him, very small with its eyes not open yet. When I got to him he had laid the bunny down and I scooped it up to get it away from him.

This is what happens to countless birds each year when they land the wrong way on power distribution lines and poles. But occasionally people see it – especially when it’s a hard-to-miss bird like this Bald Eagle. Part of the rabbit he had caught was still entangled in a nearby powerline. Mia McPherson.

Two years ago I finally caved and told my daughter she could have a rabbit. She had wanted one for a long time, but I was convinced I would end up taking care of it, plus there were carnivorous birds in my house. But Skye wore me down, and in her junior year of high school we went to the local Rabbit Rescue.

After a similar procedure, Moya’s watch-me-pull-a-rabbit-out-of-my-hat trick produced a fuzzy nestling Eastern Screech Owl. The birds were living like city apartment dwellers … the upstairs neighbors were the woodpeckers, downstairs were the screech owls. All her pets are rescues. But one day, unbeknownst to her, a wild rabbit dug under the fence. She let her dog out, he spotted the rabbit, and took off like a bullet. Since I am a wild bird rehabilitator and have seen, up close, the damage a cat can do to a bird, let me address the owner of the “hummingbird murderer.”.

They were nice enough to send us personalized frames for our dog and bird. Another thing we love about Etched In My Heart is that they donate part of their proceeds to The PetSave Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Bona Tucker in June 2000 as a rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption resource for domestic rabbits, cats and dogs.

I’m not a big fan of bird banding. When I see a band I imagine something slipping beneath it and trapping the bird, I’ve seen photos of birds with so many bands it looks like they’re wearing stockings, and then there’s the awful story of Violet , whose band eventually killed her. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.
