Birding the Drakensberg, South Africa

10,000 Birds

Fortunately, China still has lots of interesting birding locations left for me. But of course, it is also nice to remember past birding trips. One in November 2018 included a one-day birding trip in the Drakensberg area, a mountain range in the border area between South Africa and Lesotho.

Hornbills of South Africa

10,000 Birds

At some point, my stock of memories of birds seen outside of China will be used up, I am afraid. But for now, I still have the hornbills I saw in South Africa a few years ago. Even more than the African Grey Hornbill, they are forest birds. Probably Wikipedia is more specialized on birds than the HBW.

This bird is represented in an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph. Can’t say that it is a particularly obvious name from seeing the bird.

Birding Shanghai in November 2022

10,000 Birds

I did not find much about this bird online except for a paper with the exciting title “A new quill mite Torotrogla emberizae sp. Given that this bird moves very fast and thus leads to bird photographers spending a lot of time getting mostly completely unusable photos, I think the parasitism is well-deserved.

Week 19: Out of Africa!

10,000 Birds

And so we are out of Africa, or South Africa at least. Having done the lower end of South Africa, I truly long to get to see the parts farther north. There is a completely new set of birds, or so it seems, in each segment of this amazing country. So, I will just have to come back, very soon!

International Bird Rescue Believes “Every Bird Matters”

10,000 Birds

Little was known about oiled bird care at that time and despite the courageous attempts of hundreds of volunteers, only 300 birds survived from the 7,000 collected. This 12,000 square-foot facility, completed in February 2001, is one of the two primary oiled bird facilities built by the Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN) in California.
