Pelicans unable to fly due to being coated with oil. Several pelicans were coated in oil on Barataria Bay off Louisiana, their usually brown and white feathers now jet black. Pelican eggs were glazed with rust-colored gunk, and new hatchlings and nests were also coated with crude. It's the Exxon Valdez all over again.

The great green Caribbean lowlands – Costa Rica

Sitting on a beach under a coconut tree (but not under the very crown, I know that), I am contemplating birding and the meaning of life… Salty breeze comes from the Caribbean, way saltier than any Mediterranean sea breeze. Watching my first Brown Pelicans , I am inhaling deeply and commenting to Sergio Arias how strong the scent is.

A lot has happened since I’ve made an appearance on 10,000 Birds. Last month I accompanied Seagull Steve to South Florida for two weeks, which yielded some excellent birds…we missed the Fork-tailed Flycatcher on Big Pine Key, but that’s because we were on the Dry Tortugas, so we aren’t complaining.
