The Kerkini Lake, Greece: Dipped One, Got One

I dipped a bird recently – possibly a lifer. First I noticed a red cap – a male, then striped flanks and pale-red undertail, but couldn’t see its wing because some part of the bird remained hidden by a branch at any given time. It’s the boar hunting season. Among them are Dalmatian Pelicans , so big and lazy. What to say?

The great green Caribbean lowlands – Costa Rica

Sitting on a beach under a coconut tree (but not under the very crown, I know that), I am contemplating birding and the meaning of life… Salty breeze comes from the Caribbean, way saltier than any Mediterranean sea breeze. Watching my first Brown Pelicans , I am inhaling deeply and commenting to Sergio Arias how strong the scent is.
