When it comes to tropical birding, field guides regularly deal with well over a 1000 birds and tend to be on the hefty side. Travel guides are mostly lighter, but this “where to watch birds guide” is truly lightweight and traveller friendly. Each site gets from 2 to 5 pages (but mostly 3-4).

It’s a beautiful Spring morning… humming insects, calling birds. Maggie Ciarcia, a solo wildlife rehabilitator in Carmel, NY specializing in small mammals and game birds, received a notice from New York State Electric and Gas that tree trimming was scheduled for her neighborhood and someone would contact her.

In mid-December, I was birding along the Beljarica levee (Beh-LYAH-ritza), my local patch north of Belgrade, when something other than birds attracted my attention: three wild boars , appearing all black because they had just swam through the swamp to reach the bottom of the levee. Beljarica lies less than 2 km/1.2

She is a lifelong champion of all birds, and a hero and inspiration to me. The eagle was so hypothermic I was reluctant to put her in a transport box. Even as a veteran wildlife rehabilitator, I could scarcely believe the sight before me. In mammals, maggots eat only dead tissue and are occasionally used to debride wounds.
