Due to the fact that we will still be camping and birding when this goes online I thought I could share some photos of a well-known marsupial in the southern parts of Australia. We spent two months in Portland, Victoria in late 2009 with Grant’s work and whenever we could we were birding. Could this really be comfortable?

It can be challenging birding in new environments, especially when it involves tall trees! Grey Fantails are incredibly common around Gippsland and probably the most common bird around Foster. Popple] One of the great things about birding is its continuing ability to surprise. After many years pointing binoculars at birds they can still shock you with unseen – sometimes unrecorded – behaviour, baffle you with an unexpected vocalisation or just turn up in oddly unexpected places. Places, too, can surprise. I was wrong.

It has been more than 5 years since I last went to Australia, and I was even less of a qualified bird photographer then than I am now. So, the basic idea is to show 15 species of Australian birds in each post and give you the usual trivia about them. I guess it is a bird though. Admittedly, it is mostly grey.

I soon encountered many of the local birds that I have become very familiar with over recent weeks. There was a Koala doing…nothing! Koala doing…nothing! The Koala then had an itch, so there was a little bit of action! There was an adult feeding a juvenile bird quite close to the trail.

Herdsman Lake is very good if you only have access to public transport and will offer great birds like Blue-billed Ducks and Musk Ducks , but if you have a vehicle you should try and visit the Perth Hills National Parks and also Yanchep National Park. The water level does vary year by year and as such the bird-life also varies.
