Birds begin to filter down through this southern part of Central America by August but the biggest avian movement happens during the third and final weeks of October. Most of them fly on the Caribbean side, especially along the coast south of Limon, and that’s why I guided the Birding Club of Costa Rica down that way this past weekend.

A bit of background: Pink Pigeons are medium-sized, pink/gray/ brown birds found on the island of Mauritius, Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. Mauritius may sound familiar, it was also the home of one of our most famous extinct birds—the Dodo. Don’t these birds care about propagating their species? Horses bolted.

It seems that these people, who purport to claim to care so much about animals, are completely ignorant of the existence of any animal life beyond horses, cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys. The birds had evolved without a predator like this, and with the new snake having no predators, it had no problem decimating the island’s birdlife.

There is a small shelter and picnic bench at this location and depending on visibility you may or may not be able to see the coast! I have become very familiar with the birds along the trail. One of the most common birds that I have encountered is the Eastern Yellow Robin. Fish Creek train station building. Eastern Whipbird.
