The Rose-ringed Parakeets of Heidelberg

It is commonly kept in captivity and has therefore established many feral populations world-wide originating from escaped / released cage birds. This is what happens when people choose their pet birds on visual factors alone without taking vocalizations into account. Very stupid thing to do.

Hilbre, the Sometimes Island

I’ve never felt the need to do that myself (mostly cause I lack a scope still) but the island has plenty to offer those not seeking hard birding. Among the same rocky shores as the geese can be found plenty of Eurasian Oystercatchers, Ruddy Turnstones, Eurasian Curlew and if you are lucky Purple Sandpiper. Common Redshank.

The day before the marmot encounter, I spotted an American Robin on my lawn; the night before that, the distinctive sound of a small flock of Snow Geese sounded from the sky above my apartment, heading north. During the winter the birds are dependent on small fissures in the sea ice kept open by the currents of the bay.

If you are interested in observing shorebirds at roost or feeding you need to ultimately turn to a tide chart to see where the sea is and if there will be any birds visible! We were content to bird-watch the area on foot and there was plenty to observe. Thousands of Geese on the move on dusk. Eurasian Curlew.

Birding around Kununurra

On our recent trip over the border into the Northern Territory to Keep River National Park we spent a day birding around Kununurra before we set off on our return trip to Broome. At many of the sluice gates there were good varieties of birds roosting. Birds roosting on sluice gate. Brolga and Masked Lapwings. Crimson Finches.
