For many birders a highlight of birding the southeastern United States, maybe even the definitive birding experience of the region, is taking in the great numbers and diversity of long-legged wading birds. I discovered this surprising water bird bonanza at Huntington Beach State Park in Georgetown County, South Carolina.

I realize that listing is a reviled in birding culture as it is celebrated, and more listing even more so, but hear me out here. I mean to make the argument that county listing is birding at its most pure, the ultimate combination of the two warring angels that sit upon each one of our shoulders. A fine bird for the county.

This is not the first time that I have pointed out the perfidy of Republicans in United States government as it relates to birds or conservation. But this attempt by Congressmen Duncan of South Carolina to completely prevent any enforcement of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act is beyond the pale, even for bird-hating Republicans.

As always, I spent most mornings out looking for birds, and because the seven of us had only a single minivan to get around, I had to keep my morning outings relatively brief so I was confined to Tybee Island. Not that doing my birding on Tybee Island was some kind of horrible chore but the 5.2 square miles (8.3 I hope not!
