Sometimes it can be disappointing when the area has changed due to development and other times you can find some unlikely birds. As with anywhere in Singapore, it is easy to access by public transport.

Pasir Ris Park-Singapore

Our first destination for observing birds in Singapore during our three week visit in March was Pasir Ris Park. It would be a great location to visit if you only had a few hours in Singapore and wanted to go beyond the airport to go bird watching. We were soon in Pasir Ris Town Park and observing a huge variety of birds.

We have just returned from an incredible three weeks in Singapore, where unlike many others who visit the country we spent the whole time in nature parks, forests and gardens observing birds. Let’s take Singapore’s Changi International Airport as an example; it is a huge hub airport with large numbers of people passing through in transit to Australia, Indonesia and south-east Asia. With the lockdown lasting until the end of May (ironically thus pretty much including the whole spring migration – the divine sense of humor is a rather malign one, I am afraid), June still had the freedom of birding anywhere in Shanghai, not just inside a smallish compound. May is a busy month for birds migrating through Shanghai – and of course, last May was completely missed due to the lockdown. So, I spent a lot of time birding this month, and to keep this post at a manageable length, it mostly only covers the first half of May. The video is notable for the bird basically refusing to move at all.

Birding Shanghai in May 2023 – Part 2

The HBW has comprehensively nothing on its breeding: “Breeding – No Information” I guess birds are not their main focus. I think the photo shows a male bird, as certain parts of the head seem more black than grey. The male Asian Koel has a rather distinctive call which for me is almost the sound of Singapore.
