It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you? It goes like this: While fishing, the bird tucks its head down and uses its wings to create a shady area.

One of the state’s nicknames is “The Pelican State,” the bird is on the state’s flag, the state seal, the state painting (yes, apparently states have official paintings), as well as on one of Louisiana’s bicentennial coins. They are large birds, with a wingspan that can reach over 78 inches.

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the largest assemblages of breeding seabirds in the United States. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) wants to eradicate all of the mice on Midway. Midway’s birds are also protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. They are also disease vectors. By poisoning them.

It is commonly kept in captivity and has therefore established many feral populations world-wide originating from escaped / released cage birds. This is what happens when people choose their pet birds on visual factors alone without taking vocalizations into account. Very stupid thing to do.
