On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. They don’t need to be professional bird killers either, predators only need to be in the right place at the right time. The rails did indeed come to investigate but came up empty-beaked.

There is a great song by The Chills titled “ Complex “ Great link, right? Even though I am pretty sure eyes like these cannot be real and have been taken from some oversized teddy bears. Apart from the crane, some Long-eared Owls were the highlight of this short trip for me.

Take, for example, this pair of birds I found investigating a cavity in northern Chatham County this weekend. A pair were busy investigating a broken stump, though the real object of their interest, what I assume was an old cavity, happened to just be on the opposite side. Appropriate! may not be accurate. Proud cavity-owners!

I investigated where the Beach Stone-curlew had been and noticed it had recently deposited a small pile of waste. Even better, once the tide is right out you can explore the creatures of the reef !

There’s a Sloth Bear in tall, dry grass, barely 50 metres from us, but all we can see is a dark, shape-shifting shadow that eventually becomes all but invisible. Finally, the shores of the Telia lie in front of us. The Telia Lake.
