While photographing the Brown Bears in the Russian Far East, a friend of mine, Jovan “Lucky” Lakatos, was with Michio Hoshino, Japanese-born nature photographer specialized in Alaskan wildlife and experienced in how to behave facing this apex predator. At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps.

The Blue Whistling Thrush is presumably named for its loud human-like whistling, and possibly for being blue. Assuming that the (North American) Imperial Woodpecker and the Ivory-billed Woodpecker are both extinct, the Great Slaty Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker species alive.

It’s cold enough in Chicago—where our high temperature for the day was –2 degrees Farenheit—that the polar bear at the zoo spent the day inside. True, few hardy human souls are dedicated/crazy enough to go birding in these conditions (did I mention a windchill of –35?); Glad you asked. It’s cold enough to freeze vodka.

Birds may have taken to these artificial perches like ducks to water, but human reactions to the newfangled poles and wires were hardly as appreciative, especially in the early day. Many gringos make their way to Baja California Sur every year, although the majority are probably heading to Cabo San Lucas to party and test the human limit of tequila endurance. They do bear some resemblance to Sage Thrashers , but have a much heavier, more sickle-shaped bill. Especially if you can fit in some birding?
