It was an exciting experience, though a remarkably chilly one, as winters in Castile and León can be very cold. A Red Fox in Georgia, not looking very red I’ve never been to Svalbard, so I haven’t ticked off polar bear, but I have seen brown bears on a number of occasions in both Romania and Bulgaria. in the evening.

The Peru Birding Rally Challenge is a joint initiative between PromPeru and the Inkaterra Family of hotels. Besides the birds, the teams were distracted by half a dozen primate species and rare Giant River Otters. We maybe forfeited our chances of winning because of that fantastic hour spent watching the Spectacled bear and its cub.

If I want my children to be birders, or at least to appreciate birding, I need them to have good experiences doing it with me. In short, it’s exactly the sort of place that a family would visit even if there weren’t a state first record at the top of the mountain.

The experience is one of the ornithological highlights in the world.
