This non-technical book is a development from a series of lectures, tried and tested in numerous adult education courses given to non-specialists. At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Those bears live in the wild and are not used to humans. Cactus finch, Geospiza species.

Such is the burden that a digiscoping bird blogger bears when he visits the Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland, Florida in January. Most of them are year-round residents though much of the population in the United States – with the exception of south Florida birds – migrate south for the winter.

It has entertaining stories, includes animals people care about because they like them (and also addresses that concept), and it describes how the numbers of various species decreased to the point of being classified as "endangered" or worse. It's a great primer on extinction and conservation for the layperson.

Am I willing to give up the field guide which bears the mud and dirt of so many falls on so many birding trips? So here are some numbers: As I write this, on March 24th, my 2022 list includes 239 species, all from within the state of Michoacán. The latest species I picked up is the Spotted Wren , a rather common endemic here that I had somehow managed to not see, until three turned up in my garden this morning.

As of mid-October 2018, the Collaborative had submitted more than 1,700 checklists and observed 618 species in the United States. The heat map is revealing: Unsurprisingly for a site founded and run by two New Yorkers (one of whom literally wrote the book on birding New York), the Empire State boasts the highest number of species (316).
