Sometimes on long car rides, my spouse and I try to think of fun little games to play with words. "The Lazy Naturalist" is a game about identifying animals whose common names reference other animals. You play the game merely by discovering and sharing with me/us the name of a real animal. However, it is a wasp.

One of my most memorable outings was a night-time game drive in Kenya when we saw an aardvark and a zorilla, so we ticked off both the first mammal in the field guide’s index, and the last. Yes, fellow birders, I keep a detailed list of all the species I have seen whilst I have been on the throne, peeing behind trees, or making like the proverbial bear in the woods. I had visited a pinewood site in search of the grandest of the caledonian game birds, the mighty Capercaillie. I call it the Loo List.

Sucked In By Cat Commercialism. When you first bring home your new kitten or cat, you go to the pet store for the first time and can’t believe what you are seeing. Little cat condos! Rolling balls that have bells, feathers, catnip and everything but the cat itself! Your cats will get just as much (or more!)

If you can sew, create a simple stuffed teddy bear for your pup. Get down on the floor and play, maybe even invent a new game with your dog or cat. Buy a great toy: Check out the environmentally-friendly toys at your local pet store, or online. Or go even more simple. A bucket of old tennis balls makes Kelly happy. Get creative!

There is no solidarity among the big cats. Take the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. Because of this high density and diversity of species, the Selous Game Reserve is a natural habitat of outstanding importance for in-situ conservation of biological diversity. I think you could make a good case that this reserve is important.
