This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

Despite all of the dangers we have-snakes, spiders, crocodiles, deadly jellyfish, deadly fish, leeches, ticks, mosquitoes and then a pandemic-we still have a population of almost 26 million people. There are Japanese made Eneloop Pro AA batteries that will last for over 1000 photos quite easily nowadays, so this is my ideal camera.

Head for the sea only when you fully recharge your batteries. Other species of interest include the southernmost breeding population of Greylag Goose in Europe, Goosander (at bigger and deeper Megali Prespa), Hazel Grouse (at Mt. Some 312 species were recorded here and my September daily averages were around 70.

This species is still uncommon in the Balkans and despite the recent spread, Kalamas is the most reliable site for it in Greece (and this made my only second ever observation of them in Europe). I reach for my camera, only to realise that the batteries were flat. A few moored boats with piles of fishing nets, but no people.

The days for me to add to my Little Big Years species count are getting fewer and fewer, and with it, my budget. That, and 10 days back on the way was going to be a great to recharge the batteries after a long round-the-world trip. The Pigeon Guillemot is bringing a small fish for breakfast back to the nest.

In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. At the end of the year, my tally for hummingbirds was 45 different species, but the winner hands down was the White-crowned Coquette that was found in the Quizarra area of Costa Rica.
