They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). The Oriental Darter is classified as Near Threatened – the reasons are the usual ones: habitat loss, hunting, and pollution. of its hunts are successful.

Grassy Green Space in the Central Valley- Trash Habitat or Prime Real Estate for Oddball Birds?

Keep birding and you might see a White-tailed Kite hovering as it hunts rodents and one of the few Bat Falcons in the Valley might dash into view. I worry because no protection is given to such supposed “trash” habitats. You might hear the prominent notes of a Gray Hawk and Southern Lapwings.

Nearly 2,500 square miles of the wildest sections of the Omo Valley are protected in the almost contiguous Omo National Park on the river’s west bank (Ethiopia’s largest park) and Mago National Park on the east bank. As the sky turned rosy with dawn, we stopped for some excellent additions to our burgeoning bird list.

Later, Harry Fuller, President of the Klamath Bird Observatory, led us to an open meadow where we saw a pair of Great Gray Owls hunting in a meadow. Once endangered, they lead happy, protected lives, oblivious to the tourists who love them. the scene where Jochen’s saw his BBOTY – a Bat Hawk. Greg doesn’t bird.
