When I got this bottle of American Sour Red from the Collective Brewing Project of Fort Worth, Texas as a gift a few months back, I knew the only time I’d be able to get away with reviewing a beer with such brash, jingoistic imagery was around the American Independence Day holiday on July 4 th. Reflecting on a Year of Less Birding

In addition to spotting exciting new species in Florida, including the rare Snail Kite, travel across the country brought me into contact with birds in Oregon, California, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Alabama, and more. The Whistling Ducks of Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

February had brought zipping breezes and cloudy skies to this part of coastal Texas, but the birds didn’t seem to mind. Encompassing over 30,000 acres, the refuge protects birds of course, but also butterflies, mammals, and more. While the whistling ducks may have been the highlight, there were birds everywhere.

My eBird 10th Anniversary

During the decade, I submitted 1,219 checklists and observed 555 bird species, all in the U.S. I started eBirding about the same time I started birding, and I made an early executive decision (a very good one) that any pre-eBird observations simply did not count. Birding trips to Florida , New Mexico , and Texas are obvious too.

Our favorite birds of prey fly south. My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird. North American Migratory Bird Flyways. Bald Eagle.
