Like you, I’ve seen a lot of ducks in my life, but it wasn’t until 2006 that I first beheld the the wondrous waterfowl that I’d come to regard as my favorite duck, bar none – the White-cheeked Pintail. Like most southern ducks, this one is not dimorphic which means the males and females are equally enchanting.

Because “duck, duck, goose” is a little too wintry (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) for a post written in the dog days of August. And if your life list includes Bahama Woodstar , you might want to get back out into the field. The bird is so rare and elusive that it was thought to be extinct. Rally Parakeet FTW!

As Sandy hovered over the Bahamas, we got some really strong north-easterly winds for a day. A Sooty Tern flying in more familiar waters off the Dry Tortugas Then, just after the storm had passed and was headed for its devastating land-fall further up the coast, I was out surfing when I noticed a sea-duck beyond the furthest breakers.
