Like you, I’ve seen a lot of ducks in my life, but it wasn’t until 2006 that I first beheld the the wondrous waterfowl that I’d come to regard as my favorite duck, bar none – the White-cheeked Pintail. Like most southern ducks, this one is not dimorphic which means the males and females are equally enchanting.

Because “duck, duck, goose” is a little too wintry (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) for a post written in the dog days of August. And if your life list includes Bahama Woodstar , you might want to get back out into the field. The bird is so rare and elusive that it was thought to be extinct. Rally Parakeet FTW!

Snowy Owl irruptions are relatively predictable and often huge, with birds arriving as far south of their normal breeding range as Florida and the Bahamas. Speaking of which, Snowy Owls go after a wide variety of prey, with perhaps their most impressive being sea ducks taken in the dead of night as the ducks roost out on the open ocean.

With quick use of the tape and a short burst of song, I had an immediate response and got to observe this flycatcher at length — the call is quite different from that of the closely related Bahamas race of La Sagra’s Flycatcher which I have heard in southeast Florida.

As Sandy hovered over the Bahamas, we got some really strong north-easterly winds for a day. A Sooty Tern flying in more familiar waters off the Dry Tortugas Then, just after the storm had passed and was headed for its devastating land-fall further up the coast, I was out surfing when I noticed a sea-duck beyond the furthest breakers.

After lazing in the heat I decided to visit the forest pools one last time, hoping for another sighting of Hartlaub’s Duck or White-bellied Kingfisher. Kirtland’s Warblers are rare, apparently fewer than 2,000 in the world, they winter in the Bahamas and summer in Michigan. Isaac, my local guide was hesitantly following.
