As keen birdwatchers, who just happened to have found the Night Parrots in Western Australia, they were keen to look for the Fairy Pitta at first light the next day. This was only to be the second record for Australia. Australia-wide there is a huge problem with cats taking animals and birds. They were also devastated.

Europe has one species (Eurasian Spoonbill), the Americas have one (Roseate Spoonbill), Australia two (Royal and Yellow-billed Spoonbill), and Asia has two as well (Eurasian and Black-faced Spoonbill). Thanks to their friendly and calm personality, they don’t have a need to express themselves vocally like some other parrot species.

With the large distances between towns in the remote north of Australia you are limited to where you can stay if you are not camping, which we normally do. Owls live and migrate from Arctic circumpolar to Colorado prairie to South American rainforest to Southeast Asian islands, Galapagos islands, Canary islands–many many islands–to coastal Australia and onward. Unlike some of her previous subjects–Ravens, Kea Parrots, Satin Bowerbirds–owls don’t do much.

We miss them all: the parrots, the pigeons, the moas and titan-hawks and stilt-owls and myriads of endlessly exotic avifauna we will never ever know again as they were when they graced this Earth. The prehistoric extinctions most famously include the megafaunal assemblages of Europe, the Americas, Australia and Madagascar.

Picking up a bargain copy of the latest edition of the Parrots of the World by Joseph Forshaw. Joseph has forgotten more than I will ever know when it comes to parrots. Compared to that of say the Collared Kingfisher , for example, it would hardly raise an eyebrow. It’s a great book, don’t get me wrong.
