They are one of the most attractive of Australia’s parrots, and one of the most common, benefiting from the planting of attractive flowering shrubs. The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks.

My sister and family were not moving far, so commuting between houses was not hard and our two nephews have settled into their new schools. You can see in the picture there is a Australian White Ibis with a tag, which we have reported. 74 new species were added from the 119 we saw and 14 were “lifers” a.

In southern Africa, there are two species. They are most active at night and make eerie nocturnal calls which have cemented their place in many folklore tales from Africa to Australia.
