Outstanding Pied Oystercatcher parenting!

Over the years some pairs of Pied Oystercatchers appear to learn how to protect the eggs and their young much more effectively and are therefore successful where other pairs may fail. Returning along the road to leave the airport the Masked Lapwing became very protective of her nest and spread her wings out wide over the nest area and became increasingly noisy. There was little movement by the family during the heat of the day except to fly to the shoreline for a drink and to cool their feet. They then suddenly called and I realised it was time for the family to move again. I observed them from a distance with binoculars and it was interesting to see the eagerness of the chicks to explore.

Birding the Kruger Park (2): Bateleur area

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.
