We had last experienced this cheerful family of birds in Katherine in the Northern Territory over 13 years ago, so although the population is isolated there they had the same characteristics. They roam in family groups varying from eight birds upwards and have a certain confidence about themselves as they strut around the bush.

We have had a pair move due to human traffic increasing through the dune system and others have had to adapt to the changing landscape. Last week I shared with you all some of the delightful chicks that we hope to see in upcoming weeks, but these birds are not always successful on their first attempt at breeding due to predation.

We had both seen it go into the hollow and decided to go and investigate from a distance to see what it was. The hollow in the melaleuca that we saw the feathers go in Before we knew it the bird had popped it’s sleepy head out to see what was going on. We waited to see what would happen-the bird flew straight at us!

It is about an hour’s drive to Lake Argyle, which is Australia’s largest artificial lake by volume. Crocodiles below the dam wall As we entered the park we noticed the tap was dripping and although it was not potable for humans it was much appreciated by the Silver-crowned Friarbirds. An inquisitive Great Bowerbird!

In fact, the Dodo belonged to a clade (sometimes called Raphini) of 15 remarkable, bizarre, intriguing island-adapted pigeons, some of which are still alive today, but eight of which have been hacked from the tree of life, driven to extinction by humans. All of the birds within Raphini are highly specialized for island life.

We have just been away camping and birding and had an amazing time. This may seem like an incredible distance to some of you, but in Australia that is a 12 hour drive with only two small towns and a small community to pass through. It is only a short drive in over a small hill to the bird hide at the billabong.
