Of course if you are in Australia or New Zealand you probably won’t be reading this until Boxing Day, because it goes up late in the day here! It was very hard for me to choose a top ten, but in the end I decided it had to be birds that we saw during our visit to the UK after twenty two years. European Robin. Common Snipe.

In south Florida, Black Vultures attack cars ; in Australia, it’s Black Crows ; in Canada, American Crows. No one can figure out why, exactly, birds are attacking and dismantling cars. I’ve seen birds react to reflections and they attack their reflections, not random rubber things near their reflections.

A long time ago, before many of you may have been birding, I got my very first camera. The Kodak Tele-ektralite 20 was made in Canada and had two lenses and they were 22mm and 44mm. We had chosen to wait until we returned to Australia to develop the photos due to the extra weight involved in carrying all of the photos.

When we were planning this trip, New Zealand, Australia, and most certainly South Africa got all my attention. The countrysides were incredible, the people were as hospitable as anywhere we went, and there are some fantastic birds. The last week found us start off in Hull, at the Spurn Bird Observatory.
