Today's New York Times gives us Adam Shriver's Op-Ed " Not Grass-Fed, But at Least Pain-Free ," which presents its dilemma at the end: If we cannot avoid factory farms altogether, the least we can do is eliminate the unpleasantness of pain in the animals that must live and die on them. It would be far better than doing nothing at all.

Finally, it arrived--a medium-size bag (4.4lb for $22.95 + shipping) of Ami vegan cat food (via Vegan Essentials ). It was with some trepidation that I opened the bag and offered chunky Emily some of the animal-free tasty morsels. What a relief! I'm not going to leave it in the bowl until "they're hungry enough to eat it."

Our guest this weekend, Jackie, is transitioning to veganism. In retrospect, and after Tweeting a bunch about it and getting some great thoughts from fellow tweeters/twitterers, going the route of replacing someone's favorite food with a vegan alternative designed to replicate it might not be a great idea. The vet did give me a hard time about the dogs' animal-free diets (my traditional vets don't, ironically), and my response was that unless she could show me some research that his particular type of injury needs animal protein to heal, I wasn't going to change anything. been there.

Every animal is different, so what I do with Violet won't be the ideal strategy for everyone. Other times, nine was too much and Violet would come close to crashing.

I immensely enjoyed "EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED" (even on the big screen) and eagerly anticipated "EATING ANIMALS" by Jonathan Safran Foer. Finally, if you know someone who gravitates toward the philosophical issues around our use of animals, this is a good book. Ever, in fact. Not great, but good. He never says he is.
