I'm a vegan who thinks we shouldn't be using animals even if we change the conditions of their use. Of course there are oodles of vegetarians who mention veganism and how difficult and restricting it is, and overall I'm having a fairly disheartening experience. After all, who I am doesn't stop at vegan.

My husband has two friends (a male/female couple) who are transitioning from vegetarian to vegan and I also have two friends (both women) who are transitioning from omnivore and all are dreading Thanksgiving. Because I've been thinking about the evolution of my own thinking--and languaging--regarding animal rights. Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. Then again, so do people who kill animals for a living. After all, they "love" the animals they kill.

The vet did give me a hard time about the dogs' animal-free diets (my traditional vets don't, ironically), and my response was that unless she could show me some research that his particular type of injury needs animal protein to heal, I wasn't going to change anything. been there.

It made me think though about the animal rights movement. Animals can't do that. The animals can't say, "This hurts me," "Stop it," or "I have a right to my life." They argue that we are only making things up and assigning anthropomorphic tendencies to animals. There is a group for every cause. Who is our leader?

The overwhelming passage in November of Proposition 2 in California, which banned tight confinement of many of the animals raised for food, is a fine example of the power of publicity to educate people about the atrocities we commit to those animals who have no voice of their own.

Back then I was a young child and never thought any different about greyhounds or indeed any other animal. He would not return for many hours. Chris from Beijing works to get books translated for the groups he works with, and I can say for certain that you'd never take your access to books for granted again if you heard what he has to go through to get books to China. I also find that to be the case within the community of nonvegan, pro-animal activists, such as greyhound advocates.

In my earlier post "Children and Heart Disease" available here , I noted that, in the seventh and final edition of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care: A Handbook for Parents of the Developing Child from Birth to Adolescence , Dr. Benjamin Spock no longer recommends feeding animal products to children after two years of age. The answer is "Yes."
