Shutting Your Trap

The states which have essentially banned leghold traps are Florida, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, California, and Washington. A recent thread on my Raptorcare listserv produced one wildlife rehabilitator’s nightmarish photo of a leghold trap firmly clutching the leg of a Great Horned Owl.

You need to get it to a wildlife rehabilitation center. Domestic animal shelters don’t normally take wildlife and if they do it’s rare. I operate as a permitted rehab in Florida. These animals support ecosystems all over the globe where there are c3 and c4 class grasses, but not enough people support them.

On the Freezing of Birds

I was watching a news segment on a wildlife rehabilitation center here in Florida. My animal rescue-life has had many phases. It was time to feed the bird of prey who was about to be released and while the rehabber was speaking with the interviewer someone emerged from a walk-in freezer with a tray of baby chicks.
